FREN0084: Topics in French Studies (20/21)
"French Existentialism: Sartre, Coffee, and Cigarettes"French
existentialism was an attitude that defined an era. For the first time
in history, an obscure philosophical movement based on the ethics of
personal choice led to a revolution in youth culture starting in the cafés
and nightclubs of Paris and spreading throughout the world. This course
will examine not only the exciting literary and philosophical works that
founded the movement, but also the cultural revolution it inspired. Works
by Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, Albert Camus, Boris Vian, and
films by Jean Cocteau, Jean-Luc Godard, and Agnès Varda. Taught in
FrenchOne two-hour desk exam (50%) and one 3000-word essay (50%)
