DEVP0012: Society and Market: Private Agency for Development (21/22)
The module explores the theoretical base and implications for development
planning and practice of market- and civil society-led approaches to
development; contrasting these where applicable to state-oriented
approaches. It will focus on conceptions of ‘bottom-of-the-pyramid’,
livelihoods and ‘making markets work for the poor’ (M4P or ‘market
systems’) approaches that permeate much contemporary development policy
and practice, and will also examine the use of market-based mechanisms for
promoting environmentally sustainable outcomes.
