Advanced Seminar: The Remaking of the English Ruling Class (HIST0242) 20/21
This course explores a seeming paradox. Between 1660 and 1760 England’s
social elite failed to reproduce itself demographically. In many families
deaths outnumbered births, throwing sacred lines of succession into
confusion. Yet at just the same time those families dramatically reproduced
themselves in other ways to enhance their authority: politically,
ideologically and culturally.
