MSc 2021 Drug Discovery: PHAY0073 Applications of Immunology: Immunotherapy, Vaccinology and Diagnostic Techniques (20/21)
Immunotherapy and vaccine development is an extremely important area in
modern day therapeutics and we consider that MSc Drug Discovery and
Development students require this knowledge for their future roles. This
module aims to provide the students with knowledge of the different
pathways involved in the immune response. To accomplish that, currently
commercialised vaccines and those that are currently being developed will
be discussed. Emphasis will be placed on the importance of adjuvants and
delivery systems used for the development of a successful vaccine. Older
cancer treatments such as antibody therapies will be compared to more
recent techniques based on cell therapies. The module will also discuss the
different diagnostic techniques used in the medical immunology field. At
the end of the module the student should be able to:1. Describe the
functions of the different pathways involved in the immune response2.
Discuss the selection of better adjuvants and delivery systems as
strategies for the development of vaccines against infective pathogens or
cancers3. Understand the most recent immune-related cancer therapies
available4. Recognise the different immunological diagnostic techniques
