IEHC0046: Basic Statistics for Medical Sciences (2021/22)

Introductory course in biomedical statistics and statistical computing providing a grounding in key concepts, namely types of variables, probability distributions, statistical methods for continuous and categorical variables (variability of single mean, comparison of two means, t-test, analysis of variance; variability of single proportion, comparisons of two and more proportions, chi-square test, Mantel-Haenszel test), linear regression, sampling from the population, sample size, study power, the survey analysis methods, and non-parametric methods. Introduction to statistical computing using Stata software. Contact hours are divided between theory and computer practical sessions in order that students consolidate the concepts by applying them in a variety of contexts relevant to population health, clinical and social epidemiology, and other biomedical disciplines.
