NSCI0018: Electromagnetism, Fluids and Waves 22/23
This module aims to further develop the language of elementary vector
calculus and waves to understand and address the classical equations of
electromagnetism and fluid dynamics. You will cover an introduction to
waves, derivations of the wave equations and examining simple wave
behaviour, as well as wave phenomena such as diffraction. This leads
into an introduction electrostatics and Gauss’s law, the beginnings of
magnetism up to Ampère’s and Faraday’s law and a derivation
of Maxwell’s equations, leading to a discussion of electromagnetic
waves. Finally the module will have a brief look at fluid mechanics,
including the Navier-Stokes (NS) equations as well as concepts of
vorticity and rotational/irrotational flow and modelling some classic
fluid phenomena.
