CMII0019: Modern Literary Theory (21-22)

This core course introduces students to a number of modern theoretical approaches to literature, ranging from feminism and psychoanalysis to translation theory and genetic criticism. Ten options are offered, and students are required to choose two of these (one from Block 1 offered in Weeks 1-5 and the other from Block 2 offered in Weeks 6-10). The expectation is that the theory studied in this course will be used not only in the coursework essay required for this course but will be instrumental in setting the theoretical underpinning of the dissertation project pursued during the summer months. What are we going to do? You will find the reading for each session as PDFs bellow. Please read all required reading, and as many of the recommended articles and chapters as you can. In the first part of the session I will try to explain more difficult concepts and ideas, and in the second part a discussion will take place.
