PLIN0003/PLIN0004/PLIN0064: Introduction to Generative Grammar 2021-22

This moodle page contains the materials for three distinct modules: - PLIN0004, a year-long introduction to generative grammar for BA Linguistics and BSc experimental linguistics students - PLIN0003 and PLIN0064, encompassing only term 1 and only term 2, respectively, of PLIN0004 for students from other departments and in other programmes Term 1 is playful exploration of the grammar of English and of universal grammar, that is, the data patterns underlying all human languages. You will gain a solid understanding of basic notions used in contemporary syntactic theory. Term 2 provides an introduction to a principles based view of universal grammar building on the concepts introduced in term 1. In the module you will have a chance to try out various hypothesis to account for increasingly complex data from English and other languages. You will also acquire the skills needed to create an account of a data pattern (a theory of it), the ability to identify predictions of that theory and to test those predictions, the ability to reevaluate and revise your ideas critically in light of new evidence, and to write coherently and lucidly about all of this. You will develop your team working skills.
