Unlike traditional dictionary-oriented descriptions, the course places English phonology within its wider typological context, especially with respect to the characteristics it shares with other languages. The focus is on present-day accent differences and the historical changes that lie behind them. The phenomena to be explored centre around the interaction between segmental phonology on the one hand and prosodic and morphological structure on the other.
