ELCS0031: From Futurism to Surrealism: European Avant-Gardes Before and After the First World War (21/22)

This module introduces students to the European historical avant-gardes, focusing on Italian Futurism, Dada, and French Surrealism. Students will examine literary and critical texts, manifestos, and paintings by various European intellectuals and artists, such as Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, Tristan Tzara, André Breton, Umberto Boccioni, Marcel Duchamp, and Max Ernst, and will learn how to connect and interpret written and visual images and to think comparatively about culture.
