This module will introduce students to Italian culture during Fascism. Students will consider the Fascist policies and practices that affected education, intellectual and literary activities, the construction of gender roles, film and visual art production in Italy in the years 1922-1943. Through these, students will reflect upon issues of censorship and freedom of speech, nationalism and internationalism, propaganda, education, and the relationship between culture and politics. They will also consider how the historiography on Mussolini’s dictatorship has changed over time and will develop an awareness of different methods in historical research.
