The module introduces students to the main currents of modern European drama and theatre by providing an in-depth analysis of fourteen representative plays by Henrik Ibsen, A. P. Chekhov, Luigi Pirandello, Bertolt Brecht, Jean Genet, Max Frisch, Eugene Ionesco, Samuel Beckett and Tom Stoppard. In addition to developing a familiarity with these major playwrights and the main currents in modern European drama and theatre, students will acquire an advanced knowledge of the methods of drama and theatre analysis, and enhanced skills of research, essay-writing, and presentation of ideas in class discussions. The module will be delivered through a combination of lectures, student presentations and seminar discussions.
